A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.
Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.
Review by Irene
In this dystopian book created by Neal Shusterman the only thing we know is that people no longer die from illness or from having lived too long. The main problem it’s the overpopulation, people can only die if a scythe ends with their lives. The natural death has been officially eradicated.
This story follows two teen scythe apprentices, Citra and Rowan, both of them don’t want to join this community but both of them for that exact reason will be the apprentices of Scythe Faraday. It becomes a competition between both of them, only one of them will be able to be named Scythe. They are trained to kill and to meet the goals Faraday has imposed to them.
After their training for months, the first trial approaches, were the apprentices show the skills they have learned, Citra and Rowan must face some new problems that will decide their future and the strength of the bond they have created in the process, trying not to lose their humanity.
“Human nature is both predictable and mysterious; prone to great and sudden advances, yet still mired in despicable self-interest.”
This book has been one of my favourite books this year, you can´t stop reading once you start the book, you need to know what is going to happen to the protagonists all the time. It teaches you a lot of things and you can see many them from another perspective. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone that likes Dystopian books, is worth reading and an amazing story.
